What is included in a birding tour depends on how you choose to travel. Costa Rica Focus offers Privately Guided, Private Independent and Small Group trips.

Privately Guided

A Privately Guided trip includes accommodations, all meals, transportation, admissions and entrance fees. A professional birding guide travels with you throughout your trip and also serves as your private driver. Your guide leads your daily birding, helps locate target species and adjusts each day based on bird activity, weather and your interests.

Private Independent

A Private Independent trip includes accommodations, private transportation throughout your trip and breakfast each day. We also arrange birding excursions with private local guides at selected locations. Your choice of lodges and activities determines which additional meals your trip includes.

Small Group

Our Small Group trips include accommodations, a professional birding guide and a private driver for the group. We also include airport transfers, transportation throughout the tour, all meals, admissions and entrance fees. These scheduled departures let you explore Costa Rica with a small group of birders who share your interest in seeing and photographing the country’s birds.

What Changes the Price of a Costa Rica Birding Tour?

Several factors affect the final birding tour price in Costa Rica.

Trip length. The number of nights is one of the biggest factors. A longer trip adds to the cost of accommodations, transportation, meals, guiding and birding activities.

Travel style. Private Independent trips generally cost less than Privately Guided trips because they do not include a private guide throughout the tour. Small Group departures allow travelers to share the cost of guiding and transportation.

Number of travelers. Travelers on a private tour share the cost of guiding and transportation. A Privately Guided trip for two will cost more per person than the same trip for four. Solo travelers cover these costs alone and therefore pay the highest per-person price.

Accommodations. Costa Rica offers everything from comfortable birding lodges to higher-end hotels and resorts. Your choice of properties and room categories can make a significant difference in the final price.

Travel dates. Hotel rates change throughout the year. Holiday periods and other high-demand travel dates may cost more.

Activities and excursions. Activities can significantly affect the package price, especially on Private Independent trips. Private local guides, boat tours, reserve visits and other birding experiences add to the cost. Travelers can choose how much guided birding they want to include.

We are often asked, “How much does a birding tour cost?” The cost of a Costa Rica birding tour varies depending on how long you travel and the style of trip you choose. These examples show the birding tour price in Costa Rica for three different types of trips.

8-Day Small Group Birding Tour (2027)

The Budget Option: Birding on a Budget

Not every Costa Rica birding trip needs a private birding guide every day. Our Birding on a Budget trips are usually Private Independent itineraries. They keep the birding tour cost lower by reducing the number of privately guided sessions and giving you more time to bird on your own. A shorter trip can also reduce the overall cost.

We may also include shared excursions with local tour providers. A local guide or naturalist may lead these activities rather than a professional birding guide. This works well for travelers who enjoy birds and nature but do not need to focus on target species every day.

Birding on a Budget is a good fit for independent travelers who want us to arrange the important details of their trip. You still get a well-planned birding adventure, with more independent time and a lower overall cost. Learn more about Birding on a Budget.

Deposits, Payments and Cancellation

Booking your Costa Rica birding trip is simple. If you book more than 60 days before arrival, a 50% deposit confirms your trip. The remaining balance is due 60 days before travel. If you book within 60 days of arrival, we require full payment when you book.

Plans can change. If you cancel 60 days or more before your trip, the cancellation fee is 20% of the total trip cost. From 59 to 36 days before arrival, the fee is 50%. We cannot provide refunds for cancellations 35 days or less before arrival.

Please note that Costa Rica Focus does not charge a change fee for changes made at least 60 days before travel. Hotels and other local providers may charge their own change or cancellation fees.

We strongly recommend travel insurance to protect your trip investment if you need to cancel for a covered reason.

Is a Guided Birding Trip Worth the Cost?

For birders who want to see as many species as possible, or those traveling with target birds, a professional birding guide is worth the additional cost. Experienced Costa Rican birding guides recognize bird calls, know the best habitats and understand where to look for target species.

A private guide also makes your time more productive. Instead of navigating unfamiliar roads or searching for birding locations, you can concentrate on finding birds. Your guide handles the logistics and adjusts each day based on weather, bird activity and your interests.

Based on years of feedback from our birding guides, travelers with professional guides generally see more bird species than those exploring independently. For serious birders and photographers, that can make a significant difference.

How much does a Costa Rica birding tour cost per person?

The Costa Rica birding tour price depends on trip length, guiding, accommodations, activities and the number of travelers. A Private Independent trip costs less than a fully guided birding adventure. See the examples above for current Costa Rica birding package costs and price ranges.

What is included in a Costa Rica Focus birding tour?

Birding tour inclusions vary by itinerary. Most packages include accommodations, transportation, selected meals and scheduled birding activities. Privately Guided trips also include a professional birding guide. Your itinerary may also include entrance fees, local birding excursions and activities such as a night walk.

Is a private birding tour more expensive than a small group tour?

Usually, yes. The private birding tour cost in Costa Rica is generally higher because fewer travelers share the guide and transportation costs. A small group birding tour price is usually lower per person because the group shares those costs.

Are meals and park entrance fees included?

Your itinerary includes many meals and entrance fees, but the exact inclusions depend on your trip. Most hotels include breakfast. Some birding excursions include lunch or other meals. We include entrance fees for national parks, reserves and scheduled activities when they appear in your itinerary.

Do you offer a budget birding tour in Costa Rica?

Yes. Our Birding on a Budget trips are usually Private Independent tours with fewer privately guided sessions and more time to explore on your own. Shared excursions with a local guide or naturalist can also help reduce the overall birding tour cost.
