Rooms and Amenities

The lodge offers 32 rustic yet comfortable bungalows, each with a private bathroom, hot water, ceiling fan, and screened windows to let in the jungle breeze. Meals are served buffet-style in a spacious open-air restaurant with garden and canal views. Vegetarian and basic special diets can be accommodated with advance notice.

Birding on the Property

The lodge grounds include garden trails, open spaces with flowering plants, and a boardwalk through the forest and wetlands. Boat trips into the canals are the primary birding method, and experienced local guides enhance the wildlife-viewing experience.

Other Activities Available

Guests can enjoy early morning birding by boat, wildlife watching from the trails, or relax by the pool. Optional visits to Tortuguero Village and turtle nesting tours (in season) are also available.

Travel & Logistics

  1. Conservation Initiatives

    Aninga Lodge operates with sustainability in mind, using solar-heated water, biodegradable products, and minimal-impact construction techniques.

  2. How to Get There

    Access is by boat or plane only. By boat, with departures from La Pavona dock. Boat travel to the lodge takes approximately 90 minutes through scenic canals. By plane, fly domestic airline to Tortuguero Air Strip, then boat transfer to the lodge.

  3. Seasonal Notes

    Although many species are resident, some migratory warblers and raptors are observed from October - March, adding seasonal interest.

  4. Best Times to Visit

    Tortuguero receives fairly consistent rainfall year-round, with slightly drier months from August to November. Birding is productive in all seasons, but boat excursions are most comfortable during periods of lighter rain.
